Camp 4 Details
Yosemite's Camp 4 is not much to look at as far as campgrounds go, but it earned its fame as a gathering place for rock climbers after World War II. Some of the world's most famous climbers, like Yvon Chouinard, hung out at Camp 4 and tested their skills and new equipment on nearby peaks. The campground remains a mecca for bouldering, with the famous Midnight Lightning boulder located nearby (look for the white thunderbolt painted on the rock). Due to its climbing heritage, Camp 4 is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From spring through fall, a Park Ranger staffs the camp each day and you must register with the Ranger in order to stay here. The Ranger arrives at the campground kiosk at 8:30 a.m., however, there is usually a line formed well before that time, so it's best to get there early. During winter, Camp 4 operates on a self-registration basis. A Ranger patrols the camp throughout the day, but does not oversee the registration as is done the rest of the year. In all seasons, space at the campsite is available on a per-person basis. Located near Yosemite Falls, Camp 4 has a single parking lot and no auto roads to individual campsites. There are 35 shared, walk-in sites for tents available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rates are $6 per person, per night. The campground is equipped with fire pits, picnic tables, food lockers, bathrooms, and drinking water.
