Wildlife Viewing Details
With a wide range of elevation, there are lots of different habitats in Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Inhabitants of the foothills region include gray fox, bobcat, striped and spotted skunks, black bear, woodrat, pocket gopher, white-footed mouse, California quail, scrub jay, lesser goldfinch, wrentit, acorn woodpecker, gopher snake, California kingsnake, striped racer, western whiptail lizard, and the California newt. Animals are more active at dawn before the day heats up, and at dusk once it cools down. The low- to mid-montane areas of the park feature mixed forests and meadows, home to both year-round and seasonal residents including chickarees, gray squirrels, golden-mantled ground squirrels, mule deer, black bear, mountain lions, and migratory and resident birds. The highest elevations of the park are home to the elusive Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, as well as marmots, pika, and white-tailed jack rabbits. Birds include the Clark's nutcracker, mountain bluebird, and gray-crowned rosy finch. This region is also home to the exceedingly rare mountain yellow-legged frog.
