Hiking Details
Sequoia and Kings Canyon offer some of the country's premier hiking, with over 800 miles of trails. Before you get started, it's not a bad idea to pick up a map and/or trail guide at one of the park's visitor centers or through the Sequoia Natural History Association Bookstore. There are five main areas offering day hikes: the foothills; giant forest and Lodgepole; Grant Grove; Cedar Grove; and Mineral King. The foothills offer hot and dry weather in the summer, although there can still be water in Marble Falls or along the Middle Fork Trail. Watch for poison oak and rattlesnakes, and hike early in the morning or in the early evening to avoid the heat of the day. The Giant Forest offers shady conifer forests, meadows, giant sequoias, and some lovely vistas. You also can climb the historic staircase on Moro Rock to see the Great Western Divide. In Grant Grove you'll find easy trails and sequoias, all near Grant Grove Village. Cedar Grove offers some of the park's most strenuous hikes, although the payoff is great views, scenic rivers, and dramatic waterfalls. Mineral King offers cooler temperatures and mountain scenery, although be warned: trails here are steep, and the air is thinner. West- and south-facing slopes can be hot and dry, so bring plenty of water and begin your hike in the morning.
