Stout Memorial Grove Trail Details
Located in the heart of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, the Stout Grove offers visitors a pure display of ancient redwoods and lush ferns. Occasional flooding here doesn't allow the typical accompaniment of other understory trees and shrubs seen in other redwood groves. This gives the grove an even more otherworldly and awe-inspiring appearance. From the paved access road on the east end of Howland Hill Road, descend the trail and then follow a mostly flat loop. During the summer, there is also bridge access from Jedediah Smith Campground. This 44-acre grove was donated by Clara Stout in 1929 in memory of her husband, Frank D. Stout, with the intent of saving this area from logging. The 300-foot-tall redwoods do so well, in part, because of rich soils deposited by flooding of the Smith River, which you can reach by way of a spur trail.
