Ranger-Led Programs Details
Ranger-led programs are a great way to learn about the park during your visit. Programs range in length of time and difficulty. Up-to-date schedules are posted on campground bulletin boards. Programs only run mid-May through mid-September. Nature walks last from half an hour to an hour and explore forest, shore, and prairie ecosystems. A ranger-naturalist will take you through these natural communities and share their knowledge of the flora and fauna. Bring water, snacks, and sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Campfire programs last one hour and take place at Jedediah Smith, Mill Creek, and Elk Prairie campgrounds. These may include slides, stories, music, games, or informational presentations. These programs are wheelchair-accessible. Tide pool walks last two hours, as the tides permit. A ranger-naturalist will lead you through the tidal pools on the park beaches and introduce you to the creatures that have adapted to this unique and dynamic environment. Bring water, snacks, and sturdy hiking shoes or boots (your feet will get wet). Guided kayak tours last 3-4 hours and provide visitors with an opportunity to explore the Smith River with experienced park rangers. These tours, conducted only in the summer, take place on the largest free-flowing river system in California. Tours typically begin at 11:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays at the Hiouchi Information Center. The tour includes the use of lifejackets, helmets, paddles, and tandem inflatable kayaks, as well as safety and informational briefings by the ranger. Stops include geologic formations and ancient redwood groves. To sign up for a kayak tour, visit the Hiouchi Information Center in person no sooner than two days and no later than one hour before the tour start time. Space is limited and is first-come, first-serve.
