Overview Details
Redwoods once covered two million acres of the Pacific coast of California and Oregon; the combined Redwood National and State Parks preserve about 133,000 acres that survived the clear-cut logging of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In all, the two parks contain 45 percent of all the remaining coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens). The park is located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, California, the legacy of a half-century of work by conservationists to protect the last 10 percent of redwood forest. U.S. 101 runs the length of the park, while the Newton B. Drury Scenic Byway offers a 10-mile drive through the redwood forests. Visitors can hike the one-mile Lady Bird Johnson Loop Trail near the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center in Orick for a quick look at the big trees, take the James Irvine Trail through Fern Canyon, or backpack to campsites alongside 200 miles of trails. Besides forested areas the park contains prairie, rivers, and 37 miles of coastline; park inhabitants include Roosevelt elk, brown pelicans, bald eagles, and sea lions. Established: October 2, 1968 Area: 112,512.05 acres Website: [www.nps.gov/redw](http://www.nps.gov/redw/)
