Backcountry Information Details
Over 200 miles of trails crisscross the backcountry of Redwoods National and State Parks, offering visitors a wilderness playground. Whether you're interested in hiking, biking, or horseback riding, there is an adventure awaiting you. No matter your mode of transport, always follow Leave No Trace outdoor ethics in the parks. In addition, familiarize yourself with the park's rules for backcountry users: - Camping is only permitted in the park's eight designated campsites. The only exception is dispersed camping on Redwood Creek gravel bars (hikers only). - Pets (other than service animals), motorized vehicles, and hunting are prohibited. - Free permits are required for overnight stays in designated backcountry campsites. Obtain a permit at Kuchel Visitor Center, Crescent City Information Center, or Hiouchi Information Center (summer only). - Overnight stays are limited to five consecutive days and 15 days in a calendar year. - Store food and odorous items properly: use food lockers or bear-resistant food containers (available at Kuchel Visitor Center), or hang food from trees (10 feet up and 4 feet out). - Fire bans may be in effect. Check with visitor centers or call 707-465-7335 for updates. - Horses are permitted at Little Bald Hills Camp and Elam Camp only. Bikes are permitted at Little Bald Hills Camp only. As with backcountry travel in any park, always inquire about current conditions before heading out, and leave your plans and estimated time of return with someone at home.
