Driving Directions Details

Navigating to Pinnacles National Park from various directions requires a clear understanding of the local highways and landmarks. The park's unique location in Paicines, California, offers two distinct entrances—the east entrance and the west entrance—each providing different experiences and access points to the park's features. Here's a more detailed look at how to approach your visit: From the North: Travelers coming from the north should use Route 101 South, passing through Gilroy and heading towards Hollister on Highway 25 South. This route offers a scenic drive through California's agricultural heartland. After Hollister, continue for about 30 miles to Highway 146, where you'll make a right turn. The east entrance is marked by a left turn into the Pinnacles Campground, where the Visitor Center is located. This center is an essential stop for first-time visitors to collect maps, check current conditions, and get an overview of the park. From the South: For those approaching from the south, take Route 101 North to King City, then take the 1st St. exit. Following 1st St. through King City, it eventually becomes Bitterwater Road. Continue on Bitterwater Road until it intersects with Highway 25, then turn left. A left turn onto Highway 146 will lead you into the park. Similar to the northern approach, your entry point involves checking in at the Visitor Center within the Pinnacles Campground. From Both North and South: The route to the west entrance is more straightforward, regardless of whether you're coming from the north or south. Take Highway 101 to Soledad, then exit onto Highway 146 East. Follow Highway 146 for 14 miles directly into the park. This approach is less populated and offers a quieter entrance to Pinnacles, providing immediate access to western trails and the stunning rock formations Pinnacles is known for. Important Tips for Visitors: No Road Connects the East and West Entrances Inside the Park: It's crucial to choose your entrance based on the activities you plan to do, as you cannot drive directly from one side of the park to the other. * Plan Your Visit According to Your Entrance: Each side offers unique hikes, viewpoints, and access to different features of the park. The East entrance provides access to the Bear Gulch area, caves, and the majority of climbing routes. The West entrance is closer to the High Peaks and the Balconies cave. * Check Road Conditions and Entrance Hours: Before setting out, verify the latest park conditions, especially in winter and spring when roads can be affected by weather. * Prepare for Your Visit: Regardless of your entrance, ensure you have enough water, food, and necessary gear for hiking or climbing. Cell service can be limited, so download maps and any other information you might need before arrival. By following these directions and tips, you can ensure a smooth arrival at Pinnacles National Park, setting the stage for an unforgettable exploration of its unique geological formations, diverse habitats, and breathtaking vistas.
