Winter Activities Details
Lassen is a mecca for recreation during the winter months: the park road generally closes around mid-November, but the park remains accessible since the road is plowed to the southwest parking area on the south side of the park, and to the Loomis Museum on the north side. The southwest parking area is pretty family friendly, with several sledding hills and restrooms that remain open during the winter. Many people barbecue in the parking lot while their kids play in the snow. There's also a designated snowplay area, called Eskimo Hill, located in the Lassen National Forest; it's located about 1 mile northeast of the park on Highway 44/89. For those willing to brave the cold, you can also camp in Lassen during the winter; just as in summer, a free backcountry wilderness permit is required. Snowshoeing is also popular, and even a quick trek into the woods can bring you to some isolated places. The park does not rent snowshoes, so you'll have to bring your own. Explore individually, or check out the Manzanita Lake area on a ranger-led snowshoe walk, typically held mid-January through the third weekend in March. On these walks you may be able to borrow snowshoes, and the basics of the sport and winter ecology are explained. Reservations are not required; however, snowshoe availability is limited, so sign up early at the Loomis Ranger Station. For those with knowledge of avalanche safety and ski travel, Lassen's backcountry offers pretty unparalleled opportunities for skiing. The park road stretches for 29 miles (one way) and is open for cross-country skiing. Looking to go into the backcountry? Excellent route-finding skills are required, as the only marked trails are the Forest Lake Trail, near the southwest parking area, and the Manzanita Lake Trail, surrounding Manzanita Lake. Always ski with a partner, and be aware of avalanche danger and basic snow safety.
