Wildlife Viewing Details

There are over 300 species of animals that live in Lassen, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish that thrive in the park's aquatic, high-mountain, and woodland habitats. Carnivores are probably the most inquired-about group of mammals in the park, and include black bears, bobcats, mountain lions, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, weasels, and skunks. Lesser-known species like the American marten and ringtail also live here. Grizzly bears were present in the early 1900s but are no longer found in the park. Note that while these animals are amazing to see, they also present inherent dangers to visitors, so keep a safe distance, travel in groups, and be sure to make noise to alert bears of your presence while traveling the trails of Lassen. Those with an interest in birding may see some of the 216 species of birds that live in the park, including bald eagles, peregrine falcons, California spotted owls, and Northern goshawk.
