Wildlife Details
Lassen is home to around 300 species of animals, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. This is due to the wide variety of habitats that exist within the park's boundaries. In lower elevations, expect to see black bears, deer, chickadees, woodpeckers, salamanders, and the occasional bat at night. As you ascend the park's mountains, different types of chipmunks may come out from hiding in addition to deer mice. In the subalpine region, squirrels and finches may be seen. There is sparse vegetation up high, so animals tend to stay away from the upper elevations. There are also bald eagles and peregrine falcons that frequent the park. Both are on the threatened species list, so keep your eyes peeled for them during your stay. In recent years, the California Tortoise Shell butterfly population has exploded. If you find yourself sitting atop of one of Lassen's peaks, you may see them by the thousands, as wind often carries them high into the sky.
