Snag Lake Loop Trail Details
This 14-mile loop trail makes for a great overnighter -- or a hefty day hike -- for those looking for a mildly strenuous trip into the backcountry. Start at the Butte Lake trailhead, following the old Nobles Emigrant Trail (a settlers trail used in the 1850s and 1860s). Hike past the Cinder Cone as well as the Fantastic Lava Beds, which consist of wild, 200-foot-tall piles of black basalt. At around 2.7 miles, bear left, and ascend towards Rainbow Lake, where you can choose a flat spot to camp. The next day, descend 500 feet to the east towards Snag Lake, which is lined with silver snags, or jagged protruding projections, likely from hydrothermal activity. Continue north along the shore of the lake, passing Panther Spring and then rejoining the Noble Emigrant Trail at the base of the Cinder Cone. Head back towards Butte Lake. Remember to use proper backcountry etiquette when traveling overnight. Leave No Trace, hang all scented items, and be sure to have a wilderness camping permit.
