Plants and Trees Details
The majority of trees and forests you'll see in Lassen are mixed conifers, consisting of Ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, sugar pines, and white fir. At higher elevations, the trees become more scattered and wildflowers become abundant, including pyrola, violets, and lupine. If you're visiting in the summer, be sure to head up the higher elevations of the park, as the flowers peak in late July and August. Red firs lie above the mixed conifers at elevations of 6,500 to 8,000 feet. Above 8,000 feet, you may see whitebark pine and mountain hemlock. Note that some of the whitebark pine take on a reddish color; this is due to a pine beetle infestation that has become a serious problem in the forests of the western United States.
