Cinder Cone Trail Details
The 4-mile roundtrip Cinder Cone Trail is pretty challenging, but very cool because you can see the Cinder Cone Volcano up close. The trail, which is comprised of sandy double and single track, ascends gradually at the start. Once the Cinder Cone comes into view, you begin to climb a little more steeply. At 1.2 miles, there's a great vista of the painted dunes, which are quite an unusual (but beautiful) sight. Climb back into the shade of the Jeffrey pines before further ascending towards the top of the cone. You'll circle as you ascend, with great views of Lassen Peak toward the south. The summit has amazing views of the park in all directions: look for Prospect Peak, Lassen Peak, Snag Lake, the Fantastic Lava Beds and the Painted Dunes. Take a separate trail down into the crater. Start the trail at the Butte Lake parking area in the northeast corner of Lassen, by Highway 44. Follow signs for the Cinder Cone trailhead, which is on the southwest side of the boat ramp at Butte Lake.
