Butte Lake Campground Details
Butte Lake is a little harder to get to than some other park campgrounds but offers many opportunities for adventure. Stay here if you want to hike up a cinder cone, enjoy views of Prospect Peak, swim in Bathtub Lake, or paddle along the lava-rock covered shoes of Butte Lake. Butte Lake is truly gorgeous and worth a stay. The campground, which consists of just over 100 sites, is generally open from mid June to late October (weather permitting). Sites in B Loop are reservable. Regular sites cost $20 each (or $15 if you choose a "dry site" without a water pump). There is one handicapped-accessible site, A-6. Flush toilets are available until mid September; after that, only vault toilets are open. Each site is equipped with a metal food locker. Note that there are limited amenities here - the closest being at Old Station / Hat Creek - and there is no dump station for RVs. Butte Lake Campground is located off Highway 44 east of Old Station, at the end of Butte Lake Road. The access road forks south off of Highway 44 and leads vehicles through a pine forest for 6 miles, passing a Lassen National Forest campground before reaching the shores of the lake. Old Station (a small town) and Hat Creek (a resort and RV park) are the closest places to get supplies; both are outside the park on Highway 44. The Hat Creek RV/Campground has a small fishing store, wifi, and camping cabins, and Old Station has a gas station and a small restaurant called JJ's Cafe.
