Backcountry Information Details
Backpacking is a great way to explore the lesser-seen areas of Lassen. Keep in mind that if you're planning on heading into the wilderness you'll need a backcountry permit, which can be obtained at the Loomis Museum (open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily), the Loomis Ranger Station, the Butte Lake Ranger Station, the Warner Valley Ranger Station, the Juniper Lake Ranger Station, or the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center (permits are available in the vestibule 24/7). To receive a permit through email, send a completed application to lavo_information@nps.gov with the subject line "Wilderness Permit Application." Pets, bikes, and vehicles are not allowed on the trails, and all food should be stored in bear canisters or hung from trees to prevent bear encounters. Campfires are not allowed in the backcountry. Overnight trips are limited to a maximum of 10 people. Note that you should not set up camp within a half mile of any developed area or park road (with the exception of designated campgrounds) or within a quarter mile of any hot spring or geothermal feature.
