Wonderland of Rocks Details
In the north-central area of the park is the famed Wonderland of Rocks, a 12-square-mile backcountry maze of monzogranite boulder piles. While excellent for rock climbing and desert bighorn sheep spotting, it's difficult to navigate and easy to get lost among the rocks. Within the area are groves of Joshua trees, trackless washes, and several small (seasonal) pools of water, but there are no established trails through the area, so novice exploration is best done from either the Barker Dam or Boy Scout Trail, which both skirt the Wonderland. Indian Cove campground hugs the north side of the area.
