Ranger Led Programs Details
Rangers conduct a variety of guided tours, walks, patio talks and evening programs within the park, covering topics like wildlife, vegetation and geology. Programs such as "Footsteps of the Past" explain how humans adapted to survive the harsh conditions of Joshua Tree; the popular "I Speak for the Trees" walk helps visitors discover the parks' namesake. The popular Keys Ranch guided walking tour takes visitors through the ranch of William F. Keys and his family, representatives of the original settlers of this rugged high desert. The tour includes the story of the 60 years the family spent ranching in this remote location, and visits the ranch house, school house, store and workshop, all still standing. Because the site is listed as a National Historic Register Site, admission to the ranch is restricted to guided walking tours. The tours are a half-mile long last 90 minutes, and cost $10 per person 12 and over; $5 for children 6 to 11. Group size is limited to 25 people. Reservations are required; book a tour by calling (760) 367-5522. You can also purchase tickets prior to the day of the tour at the Joshua Tree and Oasis Visitor Centers; tickets are not sold at the ranch gate. All programs take place outdoors, so plan accordingly for the weather, and bring a flashlight for evening programs.
