The most well-known of the gateway cities for Joshua Tree National Park is Palm Springs, which, until the mid-century modern aesthetic came back into vogue, was known derisively as "God's Waiting Room." Festivals like Coachella, held in nearby Indio, have breathed new life into this town of just under 50,000, and new boutique hotels and restaurants are springing up everywhere. Just to the southwest of Joshua Tree, Palm Springs visitors can access the park via Twentynine Palms Hwy., just to the west of town.
