Near Cottonwood Spring is Lost Palms Oasis, which holds the highest concentration of native California fan palms in the park. This type of palm is actually the only one native to Southern California; the towering, iconic palms that one usually associates with the region were planted mostly in the 1930s. To reach the oasis, visitors must follow the Lost Palms Oasis trail, a moderately strenuous 7.2-mile, roundtrip out-and-back hike. The trail ends at a bluff overlooking the oasis; visitors can stop here or scramble down for a closer look.
