Indio Details
Indio, a city of almost 80,000 residents, lies 25 miles east of Palm Springs on I-10 in the Coachella Valley. The town sprang up in the late 1800s as the halfway point for the Southern Pacific Railroad between Yuma, Arizona and Los Angeles, but today it's known as the "City of Festivals" for hosting famous events such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the country-music themed Stagecoach Festival. There are plenty of hotel, food and fuel options for Joshua Tree visitors en route to the park's southern entrance, 26 miles to the east.
