Eureka Peak Trail Details
Eureka Peak, Joshua Tree's 5th highest point at 5,518 feet, stands over the northwest corner of the park, which is marked by steep mountains, deep canyons and sandy washes. A network of trails — some clearly marked and some not — connect to the Eureka Peak Trail from Black Rock Campground. Hikers can follow the California Riding and Hiking Trail (CRHT) to the Short Loop Trail, which joins the Eureka Peak Trail about two miles from the trailhead, or beginning at the Backcountry Board in Black Rock, hikers can continue for about 1.5 miles southeast along the CRHT before turning south at the junction onto the Fault Trail, and climbing that to reach the Eureka Peak Trail. Following the CRHT to the Short Loop Trail will take hikers through a wash and into the foothills before cresting at 4,185 feet before descending into a bajada and another wash. Here the Short Loop Trail begins in a narrow canyon before meeting the Eureka Peak Trail split in an alternately wide and narrow canyon. Hikers will eventually pass pinyon and juniper woodlands, where the high desert is home to deer, coyote, bobcats and the occasional mountain lion. Continuing the climb through a narrow wash and into a canyon, the trail will eventually make a sharp left turn up to the summit after a short, steep climb, where hikers are rewarded with epic views and an overview of the path they just took to reach it.
