The dirt roads in Upper and Lower Covington Flat, in the far northwest corner of the park, offer a peek at some of the park's largest Joshua trees, junipers and pinyon pines. From Covington Flat picnic area to Eureka Peak is 3.8 miles one way. Although the dirt road is steep near the end, the views of Palm Springs, the surrounding mountains, and the Morongo Basin are worth it. Visitors who choose to drive over to the backcountry board, a starting point for some great hiking, should add another 6.5 miles one-way to the distance. Bikes are welcome in Joshua Tree on any road open to vehicles, including backcountry roads.
