Wildlife Viewing
There are opportunities to see wildlife in many areas of the park.
Plan Around Wildlife Viewing
A good stop is not just something to read about. Once it belongs on the day, move into a saved trip and build the route around it.
Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Wildlife Viewing Details
Small mammals are far more numerous than large animals, such as bobcats or mountain lions. Rodents such as desert shrews and pocket mice favor sagebrush and mesquite flats; species such as the canyon mouse and bushy-tailed woodrat favor higher elevations. Many of the larger mammals, such as the kit fox and ringtail are nocturnal, but you may be able to spot mule deer along the eastern and western boundaries of the park in the Panamint, Cottonwood and Grapevine Mountains. Bighorn sheep are present throughout the park at all elevations on inaccessible ridges and canyons, usually near water.
