Shoreline Butte Details
Shoreline Butte was once an island in the vast, deep glacial lake that filled Death Valley after the last ice age. Surrounded by water up to 600 feet deep, the butte was subjected to thousands of years of wave action that left horizontal terraces called strandlines on its northeast side. Scientists used these strandlines to estimate the depth of ancient Lake Manly, which has now almost completely dried up.
