Harmony Borax Works Details

The Harmony Borax Works, established in 1883, was one of the first industries established in Death Valley. Borax was discovered near Furnace Creek in 1881, and William T. Coleman set up his processing plant soon thereafter. Up to three tons of borax were produced here daily, with the mineral transported out of the valley via the famous "20 mule teams." Coleman lost his financial holdings in 1888, which led to the shutdown of the borax works. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Harmony Borax Works site today consists of old walls, a steam borax boiler, and one of the wagon trains used to haul borax.
