Death Valley Wilderness Details
More than 3 million acres of Death Valley National Park -- 91 percent of the park's total area -- has been designated as federally protected wilderness. In the case of Death Valley, however, wilderness doesn't automatically equate to "remote" or "inaccessible" (although much of the park is one or both of these). Thanks to the park's hundreds of miles of roads -- paved, dirt, and gravel) -- you can reach many wilderness areas of Death Valley. And once you step off the road, you're technically in the wilderness. If you want to explore further, you'll need to leave your vehicle behind: travel in wilderness areas is limited to non-motorized means, primarily foot and horseback.
