Caliche Forest Details
A unique geological phenomenon occurs on San Miguel Island-caliche. Essentially, trees that grew on the island hundreds of years ago decomposed, and molds of the roots were made from sand blowing across the landscape. Today, the molds of the roots and lower trunks of these ancient trees stand as "forests" on the island, giving the landscape a very lunar feel.
