Marin Islands National Wildlife Refuge Details
East Marin and West Marin Islands in San Rafael Bay comprise the Marin Islands. The islands provide a place for nesting for one of the largest heron and egret rookeries in northern California, and serve as one of two nesting sites in the San Francisco Bay Area for black oystercatchers. Only 10.5 acres of the 339-acre refuge is taken up by East Marin and West Marin Islands, while the rest is submerged in tidelands. Special permission is required to visit the refuge.
