Coral Reef Details
The National Park of American Samoa consists of 2,550 acres of coral reefs with over 950 different species of coral and fish species. Snorkelers and divers can catch a glimpse of sea turtles or even humpback whales. Unfortunately, scientists predict that coral reefs will suffer in the coming years due to global warming. As the oceans warm, corals around the world become bleached and threatened. The particular environmental conditions and diverse coral communities in American Samoa provide an exceptional opportunity to research and explore the threat of environmental change on this fragile ecosystem. The National Park of the American Samoa has taken a few strides in protecting the surrounding reefs, like establishing the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary and reducing runoff in Pago Pago Harbor. While the coral reefs have suffered over the years, they are still colorful and relatively healthy for now.
