Aunu'u Island Details

Aunu'u is a small volcanic island off the southeastern shore of Tutuila in American Samoa. There are about 470 people that live on this small island. Aunu'u is known for its crater (Aunu'u crater), which houses the Faimulivai marsh. It is the largest wetland in American Samoa and was formed from the drainage of the crater. It was named a National Natural Landmark in 1972 and is protected land. The marsh is home to a few rare species, like Chinese Water Chestnut, the Pacific Black Duck (seen last in the 1970s, may be extinct now) and the purple swamphen.
