Wildlife Details
Animal residents at Petrified Forest run the gamut from amphibians to insects, reptiles, spiders and mammals. Some of the most common are birds, lizards and rabbits, but there are a number of larger, charismatic species in the park, as well. In the extreme climate of Petrified Forest National park, animals use survival strategies like hiding in burrows during the heat of the day or migration. Many animals here are nocturnal or crepuscular as well, which means they are active only at dawn and dusk. Some of the park's largest mammals include coyotes, bobcats, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, although visitors are far more likely to spot jackrabbits, cottontails, and ground squirrels. The park is currently working with biologists to foster a healthy grassland ecosystem to encourage the growth of native prairie dog colonies. Over 16 varieties of lizards and snakes live within the park, as well; some of the most common are Hopi rattlesnakes, garter snakes, Pai striped whiptail lizards, and New Mexico whiptail lizards.
