Trees and Plants Details

Petrified Forest features plenty of live plants, not just petrified ones. The grassland ecosystem found throughout the park has adapted to the arid climate and can be grouped in two basic categories: drought escapers and drought resistors. The former category are plants that take advantage of favorable growing conditions when they exist, but go dormant otherwise. These are annuals such as grasses and wildflowers, which can bloom in the park from March through October. The best times to see them, depending on winter precipitation, are in May, July and August. Drought resistors are typically perennials, such as cacti, yuccas and mosses, which are present in the park-year round because they do not need as much water to survive. There are very few trees in this area, but pinon and juniper are both found inside the park. Some common shrubs are saltbush, sagebrush and cliffrose.
