Museums Details
The Rainbow Forest Museum near the south entrance of the park offers exhibits of petrified wood, fossils, and dioramas of prehistoric animals that lived in the park. A 20-minute orientation film about the park, called _Timeless Impressions_, is shown every half hour. There's also a gift shop and restrooms. At Puerco Pueblo the 1930's checking station has been converted into an archeology museum detailing 13,000 years of human presence on the landscape. The Painted Desert Inn at the north end of the park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930's. Operated for years by the Fred Harvey Company, it features interior design elements created by famous architect and designer Mary Jane Colter. The building currently serves as a visitor's center and features original furniture and a display about Route 66.
