Water Safety Details
For hikers planning longer trips, carrying enough water for the entire trip may be unrealistic. Luckily, there are a number of water sources along the routes leading to the optimal water source, the Colorado River. Sadly, the water from the springs, pools, and streams along the trails is not considered drinkable without treatment. Untreated water is known to cause illnesses that range from discomfort to severe and life threatening. There are a number of water sanitation methods available today, and it is recommended that water be filtered through a micron filter and treated with iodine, or household bleach before being transferred to clean, sanitized containers.
