South Bass Trail Details
This trail is surprisingly well maintained, considering that it is not a corridor trail and is not particularly popular. The trail is the stunning and unique South Rim partner of the North Bass Trail; the two were once a rim-to-rim trail that used a cable system to cross the Colorado River. Most of the trail is relatively easy walking, but there are a number of steep, difficult spots, as well as some nasty trail obstacles. Highlights include a mile or so in the fragile Esplanade ecosystem and it's weather-beaten rock formations, and the 200-foot walls of the Colorado River Gorge. Water is only available at the Colorado River.
