North Bass Trail Details
Also called the Shinumo Trail, this trail, cut by William Wallace Bass in the late 19th century, follows a rocky creek bed for most of its distance. Although the trail once crossed the Colorado River and joined the South Bass Trail, the river is impassible without a raft. Walking is difficult, and the trail, despite being reconstructed, is harshly exposed and runs very close to the rim edge. The first third of this trail is the hardest, and requires some serious bushwhacking, but the undisturbed scenery is some of the best around the Canyon. There are a number of water sources along the 13-mile trail. Second only to the legendary Nankoweap Trail, this route is for experienced hikers only.
