Thunder River Trail Details
One of the most rewarding trails from the South Rim, this long trail terminates in the Deer Creek area, which is one of the Grand Canyon's best-kept secrets. The beautiful, shady gorge was once a popular area among gold prospectors, and the red and white striations in the weathered gorge walls are one of the canyon's treasures. Thunder River, which is one of the shortest and steepest rivers in the Canyon, runs from Thunder Cave, resulting in series of refreshing cascades that are usually a good water source on what is otherwise a dry trail.
