Hyponatremia Details
Hyponatremia occurs when hikers drink too much water without replacing the sodium lost during sweating. Often mistaken for mild heat exhaustion, hyponatremia is marked by nausea, vomiting, general confusion, and the need to urinate frequently. Extreme hyponatremia can cause seizures, and steps should be taken to raise sodium levels as soon as symptoms appear. Victims should try to eat salty foods, drink beverages with electrolytes, and stay out of the sun.
