Camping Details

Grand Canyon National Park offers a variety of camping options within and near its boundaries, catering to diverse preferences and experiences, from rugged backcountry adventures to more developed campground settings. Whether you're looking to immerse yourself in the serene wilderness or prefer the convenience of established amenities, there's a camping experience waiting for you. Inside the Park 1. South Rim Campgrounds: Mather Campground: Open year-round, Mather Campground provides tent and RV camping in a picturesque forest setting, with access to potable water, restrooms, and a dump station. Reservations are highly recommended from March through November, while winter camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Trailer Village RV Park: Also located on the South Rim, this RV park offers full hook-ups and is suitable for those who prefer to bring their homes on wheels. Reservations are advised. 2. North Rim Campground: Open seasonally from May 15th through October 15th, the North Rim Campground offers a quieter, more secluded camping experience. It accommodates tents and smaller RVs, providing amenities such as potable water and flush toilets. Due to its limited season and high demand, early reservations are recommended. Near the Park 1. Kaibab National Forest: Surrounding the park, the Kaibab National Forest offers dispersed camping opportunities for those looking for a more primitive experience. No reservations are required for dispersed camping, but it's essential to follow Leave No Trace principles and all forest regulations. 2. Tusayan, AZ: Just outside the South Rim entrance, Tusayan provides commercial campgrounds with more developed facilities, including RV parks with full hook-ups. These can be a convenient basecamp for exploring the South Rim. Backcountry Camping For the adventurous spirit, backcountry camping offers an unparalleled way to experience the Grand Canyon's remote areas. A permit from the Backcountry Information Center is required for all overnight stays below the rim, in the backcountry areas, and for overnight hiking. Planning ahead is crucial, as permits can be competitive and must be requested well in advance of your trip. Tips for Camping in and Near Grand Canyon National Park Reservations: For developed campgrounds, securing a reservation well in advance is strongly advised, especially during peak seasons. Permits: Always check the current requirements for backcountry permits if you plan to camp outside of developed campgrounds. Weather: Be prepared for the park's varying weather conditions, from hot summer days to cold winter nights, especially if camping on the rim or in the backcountry. Leave No Trace: Whether camping in a campground or in the backcountry, adhere to Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment. Wildlife: Store food and scented items properly to avoid attracting wildlife.
