Chiricahua National Monument Details
Chiricahua National Monument is known for its "sky islands" -- vertical rock formations rising dramatically from the floor of the desert southeast of Tucson, Arizona. The rhyolite cliffs, pillars and other formations (known collectively as tuffs) are the result of a volcanic eruption 27 million years ago that deposited tons of volcanic ash and pumice across the landscape. The park, shaped by erosion, can be explored via a scenic drive and 17 miles of hiking trails. Highlights include formations known as the Heart of Rocks, Big Balanced Rock, and Duck on a Rock. The eight-mile Bonita Canyon Drive includes sweeping views from Massai Point.
