The cattle-ranch turned wildlife refuge is a unique destination right outside the town of McNeal. From October to March, over 20,000 Sandhill Cranes flock to the marshlands for their winter migration. In addition to the cranes, it is also possible to see over 280 other types of birds in the area, including Snow Geese, Black-crowned Night-Herons, and White-Faced Ibis. However, birds are not the only creatures living in this 1,500-acre area. The diverse wetland ecosystem is also home to toads, rattlesnakes, lizards, as well as four-legged mammals like bobcats, coyotes, and deer.
