Wildlife Viewing Details

Although it is difficult to view wildlife along the park's roads, off road visits offer incredible viewing opportunities! The road is difficult for wildlife viewing because of high brush coverage, natural camouflage and the higher speed of vehicles on the road. However, it only takes a quick stop and look around to see the park's abundant wildlife. In the spring look high to the mountains as animals head higher to graze on the sprouting plants and to avoid insects at lower heights. White dots on the hillsides could be Dall sheep. Bogs and lakes are likely to host moose and streams often have bears and other animals grazing during salmon spawning seasons. The Copper River Basin and Yakutat Bay are major migratory routes for numerous bird species, the park's wetlands are ideal for spotting geese, swans, ducks and other waterfowl. Visitors can also spot golden eagles and bald eagles nesting. The southern coastal area of the park is a perfect habitat for marine mammals like sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, porpoises and whales.
