Wildlife Details
Wildlife is everywhere in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, though most are elusive species. The mammal that visitors are most likely to see are Dall Sheep since the park has the highest concentration of this species anywhere in the country. The park is also home to countless moose, black bears, grizzly bears, lynx, wolverine, beaver, marten, porcupine, fox, coyotes, marmots, river otters, ground squirrels, pikas, and voles. The park is a great location for bird life, between the rivers and lowlands and few predators. Some of the park's common birds are bald eagles, ptarmigan, grouse, owls, woodpeckers, jays, ravens, hermit thrush, robins, warblers, and sparrows. Most of the bird species in the park are migratory and will depart the region, however 34 species remain year round including chickadees, redpolls, and pine grosbeaks. The coastal region of the park hosts additional species of marine birds including ducks, terns, gulls, and the increasingly rare of Kittlitz's murrelets. Fish also make up an important part of the park's different ecosystems. Between the rivers and coast, some of the fish that can be found in the park include arctic grayling, dolly varden, lake trout, rainbow trout, and steelhead, cutthroat trout, sockeye, coho, and chinook salmon.
