Nizina Glacier to Chitina Float Details
This float itinerary is a moderately challenging trip offering class III rapids over four to six days. This incredible waterway offers breathtaking views of the park's interior from a serene and untouched perspective. The easiest and cheapest transport to the start point at Nizina would be via air taxi from McCarthy. This route is approximately 90 miles long, many visitors hire a guide familiar with the river to make the trip, although it is possible to paddle it independently. Knowledge of Alaskan rivers is crucial as the braiding of the rivers during glacial melt makes navigating difficult. A detailed itinerary for suggested day-by-day routes is available at visitor centers. There are several camping options for each evening of the trip, though visitors should take bear precautions as there is a risk in this region of coming into contact. Because of the glacial silt, the water in the Nizina and Chitina Rivers is not potable. Paddlers will need to look for clear water tributaries for drinking water throughout the trip. The water is extremely cold so visitors should prepare for the risk of hypothermia, keep all items in dry bags and dress warmly. Visitors should bring PFDs, waterproof matches, a helmet, warm clothes, and remember to always tie down boats when taking breaks in case water levels change quickly.
