Motorized Recreation Details

Whether by plane or off road vehicle, motorized recreation offers a great way to see the park. Being America's largest national park, motorized vehicles give visitors a way to see more of the tremendous park. Flying via a private or chartered plane gives a perspective of the park's magnitude and beauty. There are three airstrips in the park. McCarthy Airstrip is maintained by the state. May Creek and Chisana are maintained by the park service. There are also unimproved backcountry strips in the park, however landing here requires special skills and should not be attempted by new visitors. Specific information about condition and location of backcountry airstrips can be found at the park's visitor centers. Off road vehicles offer a logistically easier motorized option and still give a great glimpse of the park. There are specific regulations on Off Road Vehicle (ORV) use including limits to off-road vehicles no heavier than 1,500 pounds. Jeeps, SUVs, trucks and other street-legal vehicles are prohibited on the park trails. Free ORV permits are required for all recreational users and can be obtained at the Slana Ranger Station and Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center in Copper Center. Winter permits can be obtained at the park's administrative office at mile 106.8 Richardson Highway. The following trails accept ORV use with permits: Trail Creek Trail, Lost Creek Trail, Soda Lake Trail, and Nugget Creek Trail. The following trails are not available for ORV use: Copper Lake Trail, Tanada Lake Trail, Boomerang Lake Trail, and Kotsina Trail.
