Overview Details
Active volcanos spewing lava are part of the attraction at this infrequently visited Alaska park, which occupies four million acres alongside Cook Inlet. The diverse landscape ranges from coastal rainforests to 10,000-foot peaks, plus wild rivers and vast stretches of tundra inhabited by brown bears, moose, grey wolves, and other wildlife. The park has a visitor center in Port Alsworth on Lake Clark, but access to this roadless wilderness is typically by small plane. Activities include river floats, whitewater kayaking, hiking the Tanalian Falls trails from Port Alsworth (the park's only established trail system), fishing, and backpacking along the 50-mile Telaquana Trail. An important archaeological site, the Kijik National Historic Monument, is located on the north shore of Lake Clark -- it's the remnants of a former Dena'ina Athabaskan community.
