Crescent Lake Details

In less than an hour, you can fly from Homer, Kenai, or Anchorage to Crescent Lake in the heart of Lake Clark National Park & Preserve's Chigit Mountains. Depending on the time of year you visit, you'll travel by either float or ski plane. Once you land, you'll quickly see why this is the park's most visited destination. When the salmon run, brown and black bears wade along the lakes and rivers waiting to catch their next meal. Anglers are after the fish, too: in fact, this is one of the park's best spots for casting a line. You'll find sockeye and red salmon in July, coho and silver salmon in August and September. And you may also reel in dolly varden, lake trout, chinook, and king salmon if you are lucky. Several guide companies offer trips to Crescent Lake if you'd prefer local knowledge or want the logistics taken care of. If you venture to Crescent Lake without a guide, don't plan to camp nearby: the large bear population doesn't take kindly to overnight guests.
