Wildlife Viewing Details
As a completely backcountry and remote park, Kobuk Valley has some of the best wildlife viewing of any national park. The park is home to 119 bird species, 32 mammal species, and 23 fish species. The park's most iconic wildlife is the caribou herd, the largest in Alaska with over 490,000 animals. Each summer has a influx of different wildlife species as the snow melts, including grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, foxes, porcupines, moose and many more. These animals can be seen in the park's tundra and boreal forest. As the sun begins to set and temperatures drop, many of the park's birds and mammals migrate south or hibernate leaving a very tranquil winter. Some winter animals that visitors may come across are the Arctic Wolf and the ptarmigan. Visitors can ice fish in the winter and find many fish below the ice.
