Waring Mountains Details

The Waring and Baird Mountains enclose Kobuk Valley National Park, providing the shelter that created such a unique environment. The park has these two ranges to thank for everything from its dunes to its prehistoric plant communities! The Waring Mountains run in a northeast direction and are located south of the Kobuk River. They are in the southern part of the park and border the park's sand dunes on their southern edge. The geologic identity of these mountains is mostly greywacke, sandstone, siltstone, shale, and conglomerate. There is widespread permafrost in this area. The peaks in this range are less than 2,000 feet tall. The Waring Mountains also make up part of the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area that provides habitat for many plants and animals, including the Western Arctic Caribou Herd, North America's largest herd of caribou.
